The industy always talks about “lost sales”, but I’m certain that there is not a substantial difference between the current sales numbers, and the sales numbers if fansubbing did not exist. I am willing to bet a rather large sum of money that the fansub viewers that don’t purchase licensed anime would not have even ventured into the genre without the current availability of fansubs. The industry can’t lose sales it never gained in the first place, and if anything, the fansub scene only enlarges the target market and creates a higher return for broadcast deals, convention, and distribution.
